        • Evaluation on the Effect of Improved Oven for Defluorination in China

Objectives To analyze the effect of improved oven for defluorination in coal-burning endemic fluorosis areas in China, and to provide evidence for the prevention and control of fluorosis. Methods Electronic databases including CNKI, CBM, VIP and CDMD-D (1989 to 2005), were searched. We also checked the reference lists of relevant articles. We selected relevant articles according to the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The methodological quality was assessed . Data on room heat preservation and the effect of improved oven for defluorination were collected in the surveillance spots of Three Gorges Reservoir. Correlation analyses were conducted between the improved oven and its effect parameters. Results Twelve articles of low quality met the selection criteria, of which 9 were graded C and 3 were graded D in terms of the methodological quality. A negative correlation was found between the decreasing rate of normal oven use and the decreasing rate of dental fluorosis as well as of urine fluorine (Pearson correlation coefficient r = – 0.87, – 0.63, Plt;0.01, lt;0.05, respectively). Analysis also revealed a positive correlation between room heat preservation and the decreasing rate of dental fluorosis as well as of normal oven use (the two Spearman correlation coefficients and P values were the same: r = –1.00, Plt;0.01). Conclusion High-quality studies on the effect of improved oven for defluorination in China are not available. Based on the current evidence, the improved oven for defluorination and the correct use, maintenance and house rebuilding for heat preservation may help to prevent fluorosis.

        • Development of China’s Evidence-Based Medicine through the Cochrane Systematic Reviews

Objective The purpose of this study, which focuses on the number of the Cochrane Systematic Review’s (CSR) full texts, protocols and registered titles from Chinese authors, is to show the development of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and promote EBM’s further development in China. Methods On the basis of The Cochrane Library (Issue 1, 2009) and the Cochrane Collaboration (March 2009) periodicals, we performed statistical analysis of different countries that released CSR’s full texts, protocols and registered titles, as well as the time, authors and distribution of the CSR’s full texts, protocols and registered titles in China. Results The publishing rates of the CSR’s full texts, protocols and registered titles in China ranked the seventh, fifth and second, respectively. Although the number of CSR’s full texts and protocols showed an increased annual trend in China, the development of area distribution was unbalanced. Moreover, China’s published articles contained 47 Cochrane collaboration groups, without effective practice and health care groups, consumers and communication groups, and methodology and multiple stenosis groups. Conclusions The current Chinese EBM situation has a great potential in writing CSR. However, there are still many problems that need to be resolved.

        • Law-Regulated Practice and Evidence-Based Self-Protection

In recent two decades, the incidence and severity of medical disputes have been dramatically increasing in China which has a negative influence for patients, doctors and hospitals. It must be seriously regarded that 80% of the medical disputes are caused by the bad attitude of health care professionals, ethical problems, and poor communication skill with patients. Chinese health care professionals should be aware of how to establish a good doctor-patient relationship. The development of evidence-based medicine (EBM) will help us bridge a gap between medical science and clinical practice, revise our opinions, update our knowledge and improve our service. Cooperation with the Chinese Evidence-Based Medicine Center (CEBMC), and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA) will help doctors practice legally and in an evidence-based manner so as to protect both rights of patients and doctors.

Objective To review the current status of evidence-base medicine (EBM) research on traditional medicine in Japan. Methods Serial reports of EBM special committee of Japan Society for Oriental Medicine (JSOM) were reviewed. Results EBM special committee of JSOM was established earlier and carried out systematic reviews of Kampo treatment throughout Japan. The quality of preparations was standardized and reliable. Evidence Reports of Kampo Treatment 2009 (EKAT 2009) may be a promising promotion for Kampo treatment in Japan. Conclusion For the promotion and development of evidence-based Chinese medicine in China, we need to learn from EBM research projects of JSOM. Based on the current status of EBM research in China, special efforts should be made in validity of research data and scientific analysis and reports of non-randomized trials. According to the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine, EBM research should be systematically carried out from simple to complex.

        • Construction of fundus disease-specific biobank: an evidence-based analysis and inspiration

ObjectiveTo explore the necessity, construction plans, and implementation methods for the establishment of a fundus disease-specific biobank are discussed. MethodsAn evidence-based medicine study. “Biobank”, “Disease-specific biobank”, “Eye diseases”, “Fundus disease” were hereby used as search terms. Literatures were retrieved related to biobank construction from PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases since their establishment until October 2023. Two researchers independently selected and analyzed literature, extracting data for further analysis. ResultsAfter screening, 23 articles were included, comprising 11 articles in Chinese and 12 articles in English, involving 23 institutions. The disease-specific biobank has been built earlier abroad than domestically. Both domestic and foreign biobank have a scale of less than 1, 1 to 10, and more than 10 thousand samples, with the eye disease-specific biobank having less than 10 thousand samples. The majority of these disease-specific biobank focued on tumor-related diseases and consist of both physical and information components. Ethical committees were required to declare and record the construction of biobank, and dedicated personnel and information management systems are established. Quality control systems have been developed with standard operating procedures from sample collection to storage. These disease-specific biobank effectively supported research projects, but there was a lack of resource sharing domestically compared to abroad. Based on practical experience, the construction of fundus disease-specific biobank at West China Hospital of Sichuan University has been improved. Separate sample collection processes have been formulated for outpatient clinics and operating rooms. Standard operating procedures have been established for unique eye samples, including vitreous fluid, proliferative membranes of the retina, aqueous humor, tears, etc., to ensure sample quality. ConclusionEstablishing a fundus disease-specific biobank can promote basic and clinical research, advance the development of translational medicine, achieve resource sharing, and foster discipline development.
