        • Effect of a Preoperative Pain Education Program on Postoperative Pain Management after Abdominal Surgery

Objective To evaluate the effects of a preoperative pain education program on patients’ knowledge of postoperative pain management, measures taken for such pain management and the actual postoperative pain. Methods A total of 84 patients undergoing abdominal surgery were non-randomly divided into two groups, 42 in each group. Patients in group A received routine preoperative care and 30 minutes of education about pain management, while patients in group B received routine preoperative care only. All patients completed the Postoperative Pain Management Questionnaire on the second postoperative day. Results Patients in group A achieved higher scores for their knowledge about postoperative pain management than those in group B (Plt;0.05). More patients in group A took non-medical pain relief methods after surgery (Plt;0.05); and patients in group A were able to use the PCA pump more correctly than those in group B (Plt;0.05). No significant differences were observed between the two groups in the frequency of asking for analgesics or their pain score when they requested analgesics (Pgt;0.05). The average score for postoperative pain was lower for group A compared to group B (Plt;0.05). Conclusions A program of preoperative pain education can improve patients’ knowledge of postoperative pain management and encourage them to participate actively in such pain management, so as to further relieve the postoperative pain.

        • Photodynamic therapy for choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration

Objective To evaluate short-term effects of a single photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment with visudyne (CIBA Vision Corp.) for choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-ralated macular degeneration (AMD). Methods Thirty cases (35 eyes) diagnosed as AMD patients with classic CNV were treated with PDT. The data of visual acuity testing, fluorescein angiography (FFA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and optic coherence tomography (OCT) were used to evaluate the effects of a single treatment of PDT before and 1 week, 1 ,3 month after treatment. Results The visual acuity of 34 eyes were stable or improved in 3 months follow-up;and the visual acuity of 1 eye was decreased. Decrease or dispearance of fluorescein leakage from CNV was noted in 19 eyes. No serious complication occurred. Conclusion Single treatment of PDT for CNV in AMD can achieve short-term decrease or cessation of fluorescein leakage from CNV without loss of visual acuity. • Impact of moxibustion combined with Shenque acupoint patching on postoperative gastrointestinal function in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery

Objective To explore the impact of moxibustion combined with Shenque acupoint patching on postoperative gastrointestinal function in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery. Methods Convenience sampling method was used to select patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery from Luoyang Orthopedic-Traumatological Hospital of Henan Province (Henan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital) between October and December 2024 as the research subjects. The trial group received intervention with moxibustion combined with Shenque acupoint patching on the basis of routine care, while the control group only received routine care. The time of first flatus/defecation, frequency of defecation within 7 days, incidence/degree of abdominal distension at 72 hours, and adverse events were compared between the two groups after surgery. Results Finally, 94 subjects were included, including 51 in the trial group and 43 in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in the general condition between the two groups of patients (P>0.05). Compared with the control group, patients in the trial group had a shorter first flatus time [6.00 (5.00, 9.00) vs. 14.00 (6.83, 19.13) h] and spontaneous defecation time [26.00 (21.00, 52.10) vs. 50.20 (26.42, 69.35) h], and an increase in spontaneous defecation frequency [6.00 (4.00, 7.00) vs. 4.00 (3.00, 5.00)] within 7 days after surgery, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Neither the trial group nor the control group experienced any adverse events. Conclusion Moxibustion combined with Shenque acupoint patching can safely and effectively promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery, and is worthy of clinical promotion.
