ObjectiveTo analyze standards of alginate-based medical devices at home and abroad, and to emphasize key issues of quality control that should be concerned about.MethodsBased on investigation of alginate application in medical devices and alginate-related medical standards, alginate-related technical indicators and quality control points were comprehensively analyzed.ResultsWith the rapid development of alginate-based medical materials and medical devices, the relevant standards at home and abroad have been elaborated on the basic technical indicators and detection methods. In addition to Chinese Pharmacopoeia, China has issued one alginate standard for tissue engineering and three alginate related product standards.ConclusionConsidering the special physical and chemical properties of alginate, researchers also need to focus on the sterilization method, expiry date, molecular weight, and ratio of α-L-guluronic acid to β-D-mannuronic acid of alginate, and impurity content.
Objective To systematically review the correlation between diabetes and the incidence rate of colorectal cancer, so as to provide objective proof for early screening diabetic patients with colorectal cancer. Methods The databases such as MEDLINE and EMbase published from January 1990 to July 2010 were searched to include cohort studies. The meta-analysis including seventeen qualified studies was performed by using the Cochrane Collaboration’s RevMan 4.3 software. Results The results of meta-analyses of 17 cohort studies involving 1 690 869 participants indicated that the diabetes patients had a higher incidence rate of colorectal cancer compared with the control group (16.50‰ vs. 10.13‰). The odds ratio (OR) was 1.43, and the 95% confidence interval (CI) was from 1.29 to 1.60. The results were consistent by sex compared with the control group, although the OR for colorectal cancer in diabetes was little higher in males than females (1.47 vs. 1.41). Conclusion Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor of inducing colorectal cancer.
Objective To explore the efficacy and safety of the ketogenic diet (KD) in the treatment of genetic developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). Methods Clinical data from 42 children with genetically confirmed refractory epileptic encephalopathy treated in the Department of Neurology, Jinan Children’s Hospital, between January 2021 and October 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. A classic KD protocol was implemented, and outcomes including seizure frequency, electroencephalogram (EEG) improvement, and adverse reactions were observed at 3, 6, and 12 months post-treatment. Results Among the 42 children, the seizure-free rates at 3, 6, and 12 months of KD treatment were 16.7%, 16.7%, and 14.3%, respectively, while the effective seizure control rates were 69.0%, 52.4%, and 35.7%. At 3 months, comparison of baseline characteristics between the effective and ineffective groups showed no statistically significant differences in gender (P=0.095), age at onset (P=0.648), age at KD initiation(P=0.768), disease duration before KD (P=0.519), presence of abnormal brain MRI findings (P=0.226), epilepsy syndrome classification(P=0.344), or ion channel gene involvement (P=0.066). EEG improvement rates at 6 and 12 months were 54.2% (24 cases) and 42.8% (14 cases), respectively. Retention rates for KD at 3, 6, and 12 months were 100.0%, 71.4%, and 42.8%. Adverse reactions occurred in 7 patients (16.7%), primarily gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, constipation, diarrhea; 6 cases) and elevated uric acid (1 case), with no severe adverse events reported. Conclusion KD is an effective treatment for genetic DEE with favorable short-term safety, though long-term adherence requires attention.
Objective To identify, describe, and evaluate the evidence of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) interventions for cancer-related fatigue (CRF) using an evidence mapping approach. Methods The CNKI, WanFang Data, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases were electronically searched to collect studies on TCM interventions for CRF from inception to June 4, 2024. Evidence mapping was employed to present the characteristics of study populations, interventions, studies included in systematic review/meta-analysis (SR/MA), and conclusions. Results A total of 94 randomized controlled trials (RCT) and 17 SR/MA/network MA were included. The number of publications has shown an overall fluctuating upward trend in the past 15 years. The RCT included literature with a high focus on mixed cancers, involving a total of 51 TCM therapeutic measures, including 40 herbal treatments, 5 external TCM treatments, and 5 TCM integrative therapies. The outcome indicators were classified into 14 categories, with the most frequent ones being CRF scores, TCM syndrome scores, clinical efficacy, quality of life scores, immune function indicators, adverse event rates, and serum indicators. The SR/MA included 7-81 original studies with sample sizes of 551-7 547 cases, involving 5 intervention measures: herbal medicine (9 studies), moxibustion (3 studies), TCM injection (2 studies), moxibustion (2 studies), and acupuncture (1 study). The quality of RCT and SR/MA was generally low, and the evidence quality was low. Most studies showed that TCM interventions for CRF had potential efficacy, but there was still a lack of definitive clinical evidence. Conclusion The results suggest that TCM interventions for CRF have advantages but also problems. There is still a lack of high-quality research. More large-sample, multicenter RCT and high-quality SR/MA are needed to further explore the advantages of TCM interventions for CRF and provide strong support for the effectiveness and safety of TCM interventions for CRF.
Objective To summarize the best evidence for prevention and management of joint dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and provide evidence-based support for reducing the occurrence of joint dislocation after THA. Methods The databases and websites related to prevention and management of joint dislocation after THA were searched, mainly including clinical decisions, guidelines, expert consensuses, evidence summaries, systematic reviews. The search period was from January 1, 2020 to April 30, 2025. Results Finally, 12 articles were included, including 2 guidelines, 4 systematic reviews, 4 clinical decisions, and 2 evidence summaries. The 5 dimensions of evaluation, preventive measures, early dislocation identification, daily activity recommendations, and health education were summarized and organized into 25 pieces of evidence. Conclusions The overall quality of the evidence related to the prevention and management of joint dislocation after THA summarized in this study is good. Medical staff should selectively apply the evidence based on clinical situations to develop safe, scientific, and personalized anti-dislocation plans for patients, in order to reduce the occurrence of joint dislocation and improve patient prognosis.
Objective
To investigate the change of pathogenic distribution and drug resistance in peritoneal dialysis associated peritonitis (PDAP).
Methods
The clinical data of all the patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and suffered from PDAP between January and December in 2014 was retrospectively collected, and the pathogens, drug resistance, outcomes and underlying causes were analyzed.
Results
A total of 64 patients had 72 cases of PDAP. Only 36 strains (50.0%) had positive culture results, among which 24 strains (66.7%) were Gram-positive bacteria strains, 7 strains (19.4%) were Gram-negative bacteria strains, and 5 strains (13.9%) were fungi. For Gram-positive bacteria strains, the resistance rates to vancomycin, linezolid and rifampicin were all 0%; the resistance rate to levofloxacin, gentamycin and cefazolin was 14.3%, 26.3% and 50.0%, respectively. For Gram-negative bacteria strains, the resistance rates to amikacin and imipenem were both 0%; the resistant rate to gentamycin, ceftazidime, levofloxacin and ampicillin was 28.6%, 28.6%, 42.9% and 100.0%, respectively.
Conclusions
The pathogenic spectrum and drug resistance in PDAP have been markedly changed. Selection of antibiotics should be chosen according to the characteristic of the pathogenic spectrum and drug resistance of each center. Great effort is still needed to improve the culture positive rate of the effluent dialysate and to improve the recovery rate of peritonitis.
