The first issue of the journal was published in May 2002 as bimonthly periodical. The first editor-in-chief was YIN Dakui, professor of respiratory medicine, Member of the CPPCC National Committee, Chief Expert of Health Education of the Ministry of Health, President of the Chinese Physicians Association, President of the China Health Education Association, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Health Express Foundation. Since then the Journal engages to publish clinical trials and outstanding review articles on areas of interest in several forms and provides readers with abound articles reflecting state-of-the-art respiratory and critical care medicine and gains recognition from health staffs of respiratory and critical medicine and relative professions. For example, special issues about SARS and COVID-19 reported the first-hand clinical experiences promptly and gave pertinent advices and guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of SARS and COVID-19.
